Theralase Laser Therapy: Light Speed Healing

Over ten years ago, Dr. Abraham learned about the photobiostimulation effects of laser therapy help to reduce pain and inflammation and promote faster healing. Consequently, it became imperative that we offer laser therapy technology to our patients for treating musculoskeletal conditions in Abbotsford. Following extensive investigation of the science behind laser therapy and the different medical laser systems, Theralase technology was chosen due the scientific veracity, research initiatives, and safety of the system. The award winning Theralase Class 3B Medical Laser therapy system (TLC-1000…approved by Health Canada, FDA, and the European Union) has been well received by patients because it works well when treatment protocols are used. We have also benefitted from the fact that Theralase is a Canadian company with strong technical and clinical support. After almost a decade we are increasingly confident that Theralase laser therapy systems continue to be our patient’s best choice in laser therapy technology for neuromusculoskeletal conditions.

How Does Theralase Work? Is it Safe?

Theralase laser therapy is safe, effective and pain-free. Efficacy rates in excess of 90% are routinely achieved.

The Theralase superpulsed laser system can penetrate up to 4 inches into tissue, to promote cellular regeneration at the source of the injury. Light energy helps to repair damaged cells by accelerating the body’s natural healing mechanisms. Depending on the severity of the injury, you can return to an active lifestyle, pain-free (or with reduced pain) within a few weeks after months or years of life-altering pain.

The Theralase system (TLC-1000), dual wavelength technology uses 660 nm (nanometer) light emissions and 905 nm emissions. Light emitted every 200 billionth of a second (superpulsed) from the 905nm laser diodes produces higher peak powers and deeper penetration into tissue without heat or risk of burning, unlike other laser technologies (e.g. Class 4 lasers). These two wavelengths of light fall within the “therapeutic window”— that is, wavelengths that do not cause tissue heating. This allows the light to pass through the skin without damage, effectively illuminating the injury site with the optimal therapeutic doses.

What Can Theralase Laser Therapy Help?

Acute Injuries/Trauma

  • Muscle strains/ligament sprains
  • Tendon tears
  • Fractures
  • Sports injuries
  • Motor vehicle accidents (MVAs)

Neuro-Musculoskeletal

  • Repetitive stress injuries
  • Rotator cuff tears
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Temporomandibular joint (TMJ)
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Peripheral neuropathies

Inflammatory Conditions

  • Tendonitis/osis
  • Bursitis
  • Epicondylitis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis

Degenerative Conditions

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Degenerative disc disease

*Can be used over surgical implants and pacemakers!

Primary Mechanisms of Action of the Class3B Theralase system –The 3 Cellular Pathways

1. Accelerate Healing: 660nm Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) Pathway

Stimulates cell mitochondria to produce more ATP (the basic food source for cells produced from glucose) to accelerate tissue repair.

2. Reduce Inflammation: 905nm- Nitric oxide Pathway

Increases production of NO (nitrous oxide) by over 700%, increasing vasodilation and decreasing inflammation.

3. Eliminate Pain: 905nm Lipid Absorption Pathway

Effectively removes the pain signal at its source by re-balancing the sodium potassium pump in cell membrane structures at the site of pain.

Other Benefits of Theralase Treatments

  • • Rapid cell growth (accelerates cellular reproduction & growth)
  • • Faster Wound Healing (stimulates fibroblast development & accelerates collagen synthesis)
  • • Reduced Fibrous Scar Tissue (reduces the formation of scar tissue following damage)
  • • Stimulates Nerve Function (Speeds up the process of nerve cell healing in areas of nerve damage)

Choosing the Right Laser Class 3 vs Class 4 Lasers

Why use the Class 3B Theralase system vs Class 4 systems?

Because of the unique Theralase technology, ideal tissue penetration and therapeutic light dosage is possible within a short period of time without any risk of the heating or burning, associated with Class 4 laser systems. With Theralase, the applicator can be held in a targeted stationary position by the clinician or by a positioned boom arm attachment without heating risk, where Class 4 systems require constant motion to avoid thermal effects.

There are over 3000 scientific studies supporting this type of laser therapy. The evidence for the photobiomodulation of Class 3B Laser therapy is strong and substantiated.

How many treatments are needed? How long do they take? How often? What is the Cost?

  • Acute injury often responds with about 6 treatments with evident changes in 1-3 visits
  • Sub-acute injury takes a little longer, usually about 10 visits
  • Chronic conditions such as long standing cervical or knee arthritis require 15-25 visits with some evident response usually around the 6-8th visit
  • Treatment times vary and range from 4 minutes to 20 minutes per area

Because the bio-stimulation of laser therapy peaks at 6-8 hours post treatment and dwindles for 72 hours thereafter, laser therapy is applied at a rate of three times per week to maintain more constant levels of tissue stimulation. Sometimes the first three sessions are done daily. The usual cost per treatment per area is $50.00 and is billed as a chiropractic service on your extended health plan.
